Five years ago, the IRS officially rolled-out its redesigned Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax. The redesigned form asked organizations to describe their processes for reviewing the 990. In addition, the form asked whether the Board of Directors received a copy of the 990 before it was filed.
These questions served the purpose of sparking increased interest by board members in the Form 990.
Unfortunately, many board members find the 990 and its various attachments to be a daunting read. Even today, five years after the redesign, associations still struggle with providing Board members a succinct overview of the most pertinent sections of the 990.
