Background
David M. Duren is a principal in the Firm with more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit tax and accounting. In addition to his 20+ years of public accounting experience in the nonprofit arena, Mr. Duren has an extensive background as a director of finance for tax-exempt organizations in the Washington, DC area including the National Cable Telecommunications Association and the Aluminum Association.

Professional and Industry Experience
Mr. Duren has extensive experience advising nonprofit organizations and their executives on issues such as:

  • Applying for and maintaining tax-exempt status
  • Charitable gift and estate tax planning and compliance
  • Deferred compensation
  • Lobbying and political activities including IRS and FEC reporting
  • Interaction among related entities
  • Planning for unrelated business income
  • Real estate transactions
  • Taxation of executive compensation

He has worked closely with ASAE & the Center for Association Leadership’s Government Relations Section in interpreting proposed legislation and regulations affecting associations and has provided testimony to the IRS on ASAE’s behalf at regulatory hearings on Intermediate sanctions and on spouse travel. Mr. Duren has also served as an on-call tax expert for ASAE’s Information Central where he provides short answers to various tax questions from ASAE members throughout the United States.
Mr. Duren has authored many national articles on nonprofit issues such as:

  • Corporate sponsorships
  • Intermediate sanctions
  • Lobbying and political activities
  • Cost allocation for unrelated business income
  • Unrelated debt-financed income

Speaking Engagements
Mr. Duren is well known throughout the nonprofit community as a leading expert and speaker on topics such as fringe benefit reporting, associate member dues, and the use of taxable subsidiaries and related foundations. He has made numerous presentations on these and other topics before symposia sponsored by the New York, Greater Washington, and Texas CPA societies. In addition, he has also been a guest lecturer on tax-exempt organization topics for American University's Graduate Tax Program.
